I believe that I should start by introducing
myself. I am Colonel Michael Whitmore of the English Navy. While my crew and I
were recently making our way across the Atlantic Ocean we saw enormous amounts
of smoke coming from a small island. Our captain shored our cutter and I was
the first to leave the boat. Upon leaving I saw a small boy no older then 12,
come running from the woods and fall to the ground with a look of terror on his
muddy and sweaty face. His clothes were torn probably from the dense forest he
had just come bursting out of. I walked over to him as he shivered in terror.
The moment he realized me a look of relief and safety spread across his beaten
face. Not soon after I had introduced myself another pack of boys come through
the foliage. Unlike the boy that I had come to know as Ralph these boys were
only wearing belts and covered in red and white war paint. They yielded spears
sharpened to a brutal point as they seemed to be chasing after Ralph. Ralph
shuddered in fear as he saw them come into view and after they noticed me and
my ship they calmed themselves and introduced themselves one by one. They
gathered into a small group and I began to ask them questions. They were all
from a boarding school in England and had been dropped on the island when their
plane was shot down and was forced to make an emergency landing. Then I asked
what seemed to them a controversial question, "Who is the leader?" It
was answered by the original boy I had met on the beach, Ralph. Another boy who
had identified himself as Simon had began to step forward but receded. I'm not
sure what went on during there time stranded on this island but it seems they
all had some sort of lesson given to them. While searching the island my crew
and I found several fire sites, these seemed to be the cause of the larger fire
that has consumed the majority of the island. The boys explained that they had
been eating fruit and occasionally a pig they caught. The fruit was hard on
their small stomachs as the island was littered with feces. Ralph informed me
that there were three known deaths during their time on the island. I heard
their stories about the beastie and the separation of triodes. Over all it
seems that all of the boys would be greatly helped if they returned to their
normal routines but unfortunately they were stuck about 4,000 miles from
home.

It has been very eventful on the island! Jack called a meeting for the very first time. He doesn't usually call them usually it is Ralph because he is the chief, well not really anymore. When Jack called the meeting he told everyone to vote for who they wanted to be chief either him or Ralph. Most of the boys voted for Ralph, like me, and Jack got really mad! I think that he wants a lot of power but I don't think that anyone really likes him... well actually a few boys do because they went with him. Jack kind of scares me because of his obsession with hunting. They did caught a really big pig. I will probably draw a picture of it. Through this journaling thing I have been drawing a bunch of pictures, I like drawing, but I don't want any of the other boys to know because they will probably think that it is girly. I loved art class back home. I actually miss school back home there was actually a routine back home and there is none here at all. I think I should suggest that to Ralph. The other day Ralph tried to go hunting with Jack but Jack wouldn't let him. So then Ralph insulted Jack's hunters and it made Jack really mad, maybe thats why Jack left. All I now is this island scares me, there is a beastie running around it and it took that one boy with the birthmark and I think I have heard it at night sometimes when I listen real close. It scares me to go up to the fire because I am afraid that it will get me! Where could the boy with the birthmark have gone? Could the beastie be holding him somewhere or eaten him or could he have just killed him? Ooooh that gives me the shivers! Well whatever the beastie is and has done I hope that we find it soon and that everyone stays safe even Jack and his boys even though I don't really favor them.

Recently Ralph has been trying to control everyones actions. I'm starting to think that this whole Ralph as leader thing might not be such a good idea. Sometimes he will let me give my opinion but the whole "no talking when I have the conch" thing gets a little old, I think everyone can agree with me on that one. Jack is now in charge of hunting and is becoming a little too obsessed. Some of the boys seem to just be well losing it on the island. I think that maybe we should give the island a name it might give us something to do and maybe we could vote about it. Then we could start to become more of a voting thingy. What is that called? Oh yeah a democracy. But I mean with Ralph as "king" we I may never get a word in. In the beginning I thought that he was a pretty cool guy but one of the boys disappeared after telling us a story about what he called a beastie that he saw through the creepers one night and honestly I am a little afraid. He had a big birthmark on his face and my friend Percival, a littlun said that he was his cousin. I hope that Ralph will actually start to listen about it. The Island is starting to get dirty because everyone is eating a lot of fruit and that dang fruit make my belly hurt! Maybe the beastie is attracted by the filth oh no!! I better tell Ralph. He wants us to use the rocks a lavatory but the littluns don't understand only us bigguns do. This whole no adults island living thing isn't turning out to be so great. Even though I never really saw my mum and pa when I was away at school it sure would be nice to have them here now, or maybe even one of the teachers from school. All of the bigguns make fun of this smart boy named Piggy but i don't think that they notice how much he helps us. His glasses started the fire and he got everyones names and gave the idea of the smoke fire at the top of the mountain. Maybe we should name the mountain too. I think that Ralph and Jack owe more to Piggy then they think. Lastly there is this boy Roger, he is not very nice to well anyone but I guess we all have to deal with him its not like we can vote him off the island or anything.

My name is Simon. I am 10 years old. I am from England, but recently while trying to escape the atom bomb my plane crashed. Everyone in the world could be dead but I, well we, wouldn't know because currently I am stuck on an island. When I say "we" I mean the choir, Ralph, Piggy, Eric, and Sam, these are all my new friends, except the choir I know them, I am part of the choir. Back in England we used to travel around and sing at others schools or have small concerts. Jack was our leader and he is here with us. Jack wanted to be our leader but when everyone voted they voted Ralph as the leader. Ralph is a pretty cool guy. He took me along with Jack and him when they went on an adventure up the mountain on the island to see where we were and if were on an island. On the way we found a pig but for some reason Ralph couldn't kill it. I've begun to notice that life here is going to be hard. I have been dropped from an English boarding school where I was always protected by the outer walls into an totally open island with no adults or p
rotection, anything could happen. The best part is that Ralph really likes me. He lets me hep him hunt and address the others with this big shell he calls the conch. The rule is that when someone is holding it and we are having a meeting no one else can talk. I really like this idea because back home in the choir I would never get to talk because of Jack, he didn't really like me. But thats okay cuz he isn't the leader Ralph is. Overall this whole island living thing isn't all that bad.
